Centre for Railway Research (CRR)
This center is a collaboration between IIT Kharagpur and Indian Railways. The center is working to advance railway technology and improve railway infrastructure. It develops solutions for improving train safety, energy efficiency, and overall system performance. With the growing need for efficient and sustainable transportation, the CRR plays a crucial role in shaping the future of railway networks.
Central Research Facility (CRF)
This facility is developed as a central research space for all IIT Kharagpur students. It has two main divisions. The first is the Materials Science Division and the second is the Life Science Division. There are 36 labs, each supervised by a faculty member. The CRF serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research that encourages students to explore new scientific and technological frontiers.
Centre for Theoretical Studies (CTS)
It was founded in 1998, this center promotes research in fundamental sciences and Engg. The center allows the faculty and students to sit together who have the same interests. The CTS focuses on theoretical investigations, mathematical modeling, and computational simulations. The researchers are working here on complex topics such as quantum mechanics, astrophysics, statistical mechanics, and nonlinear dynamics, leading to significant contributions in pure and applied sciences.
Computer and Informatics Centre
This center is developed to manage the institute’s computing and network infrastructure. It ensures internet connectivity across the campus such as academic buildings, hostels, faculty residences, and other areas. The center also supports research in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analytics. With the rapid advancements in digital technology, the Computer and Informatics Centre is becoming essential for cloud computing, and big data analysis.
Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell (KCSTC)
It was founded in 1998. This center is working on space-related technologies. In the beginning, it focused on MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), communications, and cryogenics. But now the research has expanded to materials, control systems, micro-propulsion, and VLSI design. The center is also working on radio frequency (RF) design, electromagnetics, and electronic safety measures.
Membrane Separation Lab
This lab is working on solutions for clean drinking water, industrial wastewater treatment, reasonable healthcare devices, fruit juice processing, and computational modeling of transport processes. The lab develops advanced filtration and purification systems utilizing membrane technology. These innovations play an essential role in managing global challenges related to water scarcity, pollution control, and medical diagnostics.
Microfluidics and Microscale Transport Processes Lab
This lab studies how small amounts of fluids behave at the micro and nano levels. The research is useful in biotechnology, biomedical Engg, chemical Engg, and electronic cooling systems. Microfluidic devices developed in this lab will be used in lab-on-a-chip technologies and personalized medicine. This lab is working on methods for specific fluid manipulation, cell sorting, and DNA analysis.
National Facility of Stable Isotope Geochemistry (NAFSIG)
It was founded in 2004, this establishment delivers isotope data to researchers mainly those who are studying Earth and environmental sciences. The center was initially funded by the Dept of Science and Technology and later expanded with IIT Kharagpur’s support. Researchers in this center use stable isotope techniques to analyze climate change patterns, geological formations, and biogeochemical cycles.
National Facility for Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (NAFEPMA)
This facility is Located in the Dept of Geology and Geophysics. It has an electron probe microanalyzer used since 2008 for high-priority research. This facility also has a scanning electron microscope lab. These advanced imaging and analytical tools allow scientists to study the composition of minerals and metals in this lab.
Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) – Eastern India
RuTAG supports rural entrepreneurs by providing science and technology solutions. It is coordinated by the Principal Scientific Adviser’s office. It helps in the development and promotion of useful technologies for rural communities. The group focuses on improving agricultural productivity, renewable energy solutions, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Security of Internet of Things (IoT) Laboratory
This lab studies future technologies, especially IoT, where billions of smart devices communicate and interact with each other. The research here focuses on making these systems secure and efficient. As IoT continues to expand into smart cities, healthcare, and industrial automation, ensuring data privacy and cybersecurity becomes essential. Researchers at this lab develop encryption protocols, secure network architectures, and AI-driven threat detection systems to protect connected devices from cyber threats.
